One of the common challenges in analyzing the Iranian market is the gap between what customers say and what they actually do. During interviews or when completing questionnaires, people often try to respond in a rational or socially acceptable way. However, what happens at the moment of purchase, especially during a Shop-Along, can be quite different.

Definition of Shop-Along

Shop-Along is a research method in which a researcher accompanies a customer, either in-person or remotely, to a store or shopping location. From the moment a product catches the customer’s attention, through comparison, hesitation, final selection, or even abandonment, the researcher asks questions in real time.

This method allows the researcher to gain deep insights into the shopping experience and the factors influencing customer decision-making through direct observation and interactive, open-ended questions.

Topics That Can Be Discussed With Customers

  • Product: shelf placement, signage, packaging, labeling, pricing, and branding

  • Physical store environment: layout, lighting, ease of movement, and cleanliness

  • Staff: availability and helpfulness of employees, salespeople, or customer service

Sample questions to gain deeper insights into shopping behavior:

  • Where do you start? (Do you know where the product is, or do you need assistance?)

  • How easy/quick was it to find the product?

  • Is moving around the store comfortable for you?

  • Did anything distract you along the way?

  • Does the product placement catch your attention?

  • Do brand or discounts influence your purchase decision?

  • Is it easy to pick up the product from the shelf?

  • Does the packaging provide the necessary product information?

According to KPMG, more than half of buyers prefer to see or try the product in person before purchasing. Using Shop-Along, researchers can understand consumer behavior and reactions at the point of purchase and help brands design online shopping experiences that closely replicate the in-person experience.

Similar to In-Home Usage Tests (IHUTs), Shop-Along is an excellent method for collecting real-time market data at the point of purchase (POP). It can be conducted individually or in small groups.

Is Shop-Along a qualitative or quantitative research method?

It can be designed for either purpose, depending mainly on the sample size:

  • Quantitative

If more than 50–100 cases are conducted nationwide, it leans toward quantitative research, providing statistical validity.

  • Qualitative

If only a few cases (e.g., 8 in a local grocery store) are conducted, the results will be descriptive, in-depth, and exploratory.

Shop-Along

Qualitative approach

  • More personal, detailed, and designed for smaller groups.

  • Provides opportunities to uncover consumer thoughts, motivations, and emotions.

  • Typical questions:

    • Why did the participant choose a specific product?

    • What was their overall impression of the shopping experience?

    • How do they feel about the store layout?

Quantitative approach

  • Conducted on a larger scale (50+ Shop-Alongs).

  • Less focus on personal stories, more on measurable, statistically reliable patterns.

What Are the Benefits of Shop-Along?

Direct Observation of Consumer Behavior

Shop-Along allows researchers to observe real customer behavior live and in the moment. The researcher can see the steps of product selection, comparison, and interaction with in-store stimuli (such as packaging and pricing) up close, understanding which factors truly influence the customer’s final purchase decision.

Real-Time Feedback

This method enables instant questioning and responses from customers. Instead of waiting until after the purchase, data about interests and needs are collected during the shopping moment. This immediate feedback helps quickly identify opportunities and challenges in the purchase process.

Identifying Purchase Barriers

Shop-Along reveals complex situations in the shopping journey. For instance, when a customer has trouble finding a product or lacks sufficient information, these obstacles become visible through live observation. Recognizing these barriers promptly can improve the overall shopping experience.

Assessing Packaging and Store Layout

Researchers can observe customer reactions to product packaging, shelf arrangement, and in-store displays. This information helps brands understand which packaging designs or layouts attract shoppers’ attention.

Competitor Comparison

Companies can also examine consumer reactions to competitors’ products, aiding in brand positioning and adjusting marketing strategies in relation to rivals.

Evaluating Advertising Effectiveness

The impact of store signage, flyers, and other promotional displays on buyer behavior can be measured through Shop-Along. For example, researchers can see whether customers notice a particular advertisement or how long they focus on a specific poster.

Why Shop-Along Is Essential for the Iranian Market

Shopping behavior in Iran is influenced not only by advertising or product features but also by cultural, social, and economic factors, which cannot always be analyzed through numbers alone.

For example, in many Iranian households, purchasing decisions are made collectively. A child’s preference, a sister’s recommendation, a mother’s prior experience, and even the salesperson’s opinion all contribute to the final decision. This cultural aspect makes methods like Shop-Along especially necessary, as it allows researchers to understand who really makes the decision and which hidden factors play a role.

Moreover, analyzing Iranian consumer behavior in-store differs from digital behavior. Many people may research online before shopping, but their final decision often changes in the store, based on seeing the product or hearing the salesperson’s advice. Direct observation is the only way to understand what truly drives purchase behavior, not just what people claim.

How a Shop-Along project is executed

Step 1: Kickoff Meeting

Like any other research project, the Shop-Along process begins with a kickoff meeting between the client and the research company.

This meeting helps both parties clearly understand the goals and expectations of the project. A shared understanding ensures that the project moves in the right direction from the very beginning.

During this meeting, decisions are made regarding participant recruitment and the design of the interview guide.

Step 2: Defining Participant Criteria

At this stage, it must be determined who should participate. The recruitment process should be designed based on the target demographic profile.

These criteria may include:

  • Gender

  • Age groups

  • Income levels

  • Types of products they purchase

  • Types of stores they visit

  • Other relevant factors

Step 3: Selecting Locations

The location of the study can significantly affect the composition of the sample and the accuracy of the results. Choosing the right city or area helps the brand obtain a sample representative of its target market.

For example, instead of conducting research in major cities like Tehran, nearby smaller cities may be chosen as test samples. These areas, in addition to demographic diversity, are generally more cost-effective in terms of advertising, media, and logistics, allowing the project to be executed with lower budget and time.

Consequently, conducting initial studies in these regions provides a realistic view of part of the target market and aids in better planning for subsequent stages of the research.

Step 4: Participant Recruitment

If you plan to recruit participants in advance, this must be done before the project date.

For example, the research company may contact individuals via phone, online panels, or social media to invite them to visit Store ABC on Date D at Time E for a 30-minute Shop-Along session.

If greater flexibility is needed, recruitment can be done on-site at the store; that is, when participants enter the store, they are briefly screened using a short questionnaire, and if eligible, they are immediately included in the project.

Step 5: Designing the Interview Guide

One of the most important components of executing a Shop-Along project is the interview guide, which the interviewer uses while walking through the store and accompanying the customer. This guide lists all the questions and topics that need to be addressed to cover the key objectives of the project and the marketing research.

The stronger and more structured the guide, the better and more reliable the results will be. You might have a well-prepared guide but still produce a weak report; however, it is impossible to generate a good report without a strong guide.

Garbage in, garbage out – low-quality input results in low-quality output.

Step 6: Fieldwork

At this stage, interviewers conduct the Shop-Along sessions. This phase combines in-depth interviews (IDIs) with ethnographic research.

The main goal is to make the shopping experience as natural and realistic as possible.

In many cases, interviewers need to step back in less critical areas (e.g., secondary aisles) so that participants feel free and comfortable while shopping.

Step 7: Analysis and Reporting

In the final stage, all collected data and feedback are reviewed and analyzed.

In some cases, digital recording of the process can be helpful, allowing the interviewer to fully focus on the conversation with the participant.

This reduces the need for rapid note-taking, enabling the interviewer to listen more attentively and, if needed, ask deeper follow-up questions.

When Behavioral and Digital Data Are Combined

In recent years, many brands have turned to analyzing user behavior in the digital space. Tools such as online sales data or in-app navigation paths provide valuable insights. Yet, this picture remains incomplete.

Why? Because many key decisions are still made in the physical environment, where the final choice is influenced by store lighting, interaction with sales staff, or even a momentary feeling about the product.

By combining data from Shop-Along with digital insights, brands can obtain a more comprehensive view of customer behavior. For example, digital analytics might show that customers are interested in a specific product page, while Shop-Along reveals that the same product is ignored in-store. These discrepancies provide deep clues for analyzing market trends.

An Experience Beyond Questionnaires

In a world where consumers are bombarded with information, options, and stimuli, understanding them through simple conversations is no longer sufficient. Researchers need to observe them in the real moment of choice, hesitation, and decision-making.

Shop-Along allows brands to see customer behavior as it actually happens—without intermediaries, without subjective interpretation, and exactly at the moment of purchase.

Through careful observation, hands-on experience, and deep analysis of consumer behavior, brands can redesign strategies, create more effective marketing campaigns, and, most importantly, get closer to their audience.

Market research companies that integrate Shop-Along with other tools not only create a more accurate picture of the customer, but also enable brands to make targeted, reality-based decisions.
